What better way to demonstrate our work by showing it in use. So we are going to demonstrate how a typical customer might use the Glamourous Gowns website. Glamourous Gowns is a Bridal Business that wanted to establish a web presence and sell Bridalwear and Accessories online. They also wanted to use the site to drive business to their Bridal Shop.
On arriving at the website, the customer is presented with the following screen:
The design is clean and uncluttered. A Search box is prominent, and the footer contains a Contact form which can be accessed from any page. The footer also contains all site links not directly related to shopping.
To navigate through the various shopping departments, you use the menu at the top of the screen. We opted for "Mega Menus" as opposed to the more traditional hierarchical menus. We chose this route because it allowed us to include more images to whet a customer's appetite.
From the menu, a customer selects a particular category. In the case of Glamourous Gowns, there are a small number of designers with multiple styles of dress, so it made sense to group most of the menus by designer and style. Every site will be different though. The key point is that all drilling down is replaced with the mega menu, providing a simple, flat structure.
The category view allows for a category-wide description and links, allowing you to access additional information relevent to all items. For instance, you can quickly view all the available colours...
...or check your size using the size charts.
You can also toggle the size of the thumbnails displayed. Again, it should be noted how uncluttered the design looks. This is intentional. There are no distractions.
When you click on a thumbnail, you get taken to the Item Page itself. Again, it is uncluttered. The only excess information is the list of similar products you get below the product description. It would have been possible to include a list of the most popular items as well. However, the Bridal Industry is somewhat different from most retail. A good proportion of brides won't even consider a dress they consider popular, and the last thing we want to do is provide a customer with a reason not to buy something! Consequently, we decided not to include a list of popular items.
