Installing the BT Voyager 240

NB: If you have received a CD with your package, either use the CD OR use these instructions. do not use both. If you have no CD, just follow these instructions.

Before you proceed with the installation, you should prepare your PC.

How to prepare your PC for an ethernet modem

Ethernet modems are “always on” ADSL router/modems. (ADSL just means broadband). In English this means that you don’t have to dial up each time you access the internet. Instead you configure the modem and it dials up for you automatically. As far as you are concerned, you are always on the internet.

Now, your existing setup may well have a dialup connection to the internet already configured. You will no longer need this, so you should configure Internet Explorer not to use it. In fact, you want to tell Internet Explorer to use nothing. This is because the modem itself will tell your computer where to get the internet from.

So before you start configuring your modem, you need to check Internet Explorer’s configuration. The following guide assumes you are using XP. If you are using another Operating System and you can’t follow the instructions, then just drop us an email. Don’t spend ages trying to sort it out.

  1. Click the START button at the bottom left of the screen.
  2. Open the Control Panel
  3. Double Click “Internet Options”. This will open a dialog box
  4. On the GENERAL tab you see, click the USE BLANK button.
This will turn off your home page. We do this because when we are configuring the modem, there will be no internet access. If you had a home page specified here, it would still try to load, and take ages. By setting it to blank it speeds up the configuration process. Once you are complete, you can return here and type in whatever homepage you want.
  5. Click the CONNECTIONS tab, and make sure it is set to “Never dial a connection.”
  6. Click the LAN SETTINGS button, and make sure all the controls are empty, as shown below.

  7. Click OK and close the remaining dialog boxes.

To test this worked, load Internet Explorer. It should immediately show a blank screen.

Once you have done that, its time to get the 240 up and running...

Setting up the hardware.
  1. Unpack everything from the box.
  2. Connect a microfilter to every phone socket that is used in the house.
  3. Connect one end of the black phone cable provided into one of the microfilters you just connected.
  4. Attach the other end to the DSL socket on the modem.
  5. Connect the power supply to the modem, and switch it on.
Most of the lights will light up, then after a few seconds only a couple should remain lit.
Connecting The PC to the Modem.
For Ethernet connections

Just connect the Ethernet cable from your PC to the modem. It can go into any of the 4 ethernet lan ports.

Configuring the Modem
  1. Wait a couple of minutes after you have connected everything as outlined in the preceding section, as it takes a few seconds for the modem to start up properly and detect the presence of ADSL.
  2. Using a web browser, navigate to http://192.168.1.1
  3. Enter your ISP username and password.
NB if you are AOL your username is [yourAOLname]@AOL.COM. It is NOT just [yourAOLname]
Also, AOL passwords should be entered in lower case and be no longer than 8 characters.
  4. Press CONNECT

That’s it!

You are now online. You won’t have to do the above again. In future, to get on the net, just open up your web browser and away you go.

You can configure more options on the router by entering the advanced menu. If you get asked for a username and password it is as follows:

Username: admin
Password: admin
